For someone that is new to using Joomla, the terminology can be a little confusing. I can help make sense of the lingo by explaining what each term means in the context of the Joomla content management system.
Section - The first level of content organization. Category - The second level of content organization; subdivides sections. Article - A single piece of content (text, images, custom HTML). Menu - A navigational structure that defines all of the pages of the site. You can have multiple menus. Menus must be displayed as a modules to appear on the site. Package - An installable zip file containing an extension. Extension - An component, module, plugin, or template. Download extesions from extensions.joomla.org. Component - An add-on to Joomla that usually has it's own configuration and manager pages under the Components menu. Module - Displays something within a pre-defined position on the website. Plugin - An extension that usually works behind the scenes. Template - An extension that contains design files through which to display your website. User - Can have permissions anywhere between a front-end Registered User to a back-end Super Administrator. Title - Used to name an item in an edit page. Alias - The URL-friendly version of the title. This is used in SEF URLs SEF - Search Engine Friendly. SEF URLs use URL rewriting to use keyword-rich URL strings instead of PHP variables. Front Page - a.k.a. Home Page. Articles can be assigned to show up on the home page. Most websites only have one article that is assigned to the Front Page. Publish - The item displays on the front-end website. Unpublished items will not display on the front-end, but will be available in the backend for reuse later. Access Level - The permission in which a user can view the item. Parameter - Various options in the right sidebar of an edit page. |
